He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. Those books were published by Scholastic, one of the largest publishers of children’s books authors, and the books were later adapted to a television show. The best of the Puritan poets, Edward Taylor, whose work was not published until two centuries after his death, wrote metaphysical verse worthy of comparison with that of the English metaphysical poet George Herbert. The first requires that students “read a wide range of print and nonprint texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of the cultures of the United States and the world” and that among these texts “are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works” (IRA and NCTE, 1996, p. 27).
